Platy
Pet December 23rd, 2005Name: Platy
Common name: Platy, sometimes variatus or southern platy.
Origin: North Eastern Central America
Size: 2 – 2½ in. (5 – 6.25 cm.)
Care:
Platys are very easy to care for, and are great beginner fish. Platy’s prefer water temperature at 76-79F ( 24.4-26.1C). Platy’s are very hardy, and can adapt to many types of water. PH can rage from acidic (6.5) to basic (8.2). Platy’s have even been reported to live in brackish water (lightly salted water) and experience no negative effects of it.
Diet:
Flake, frozen, freeze dried, and live food is all accepted by the Platy, and all should be fed to them on a rotating basis. Although flake can be their staple diet, it will keep them more healthy to feed varying food, and help them show better colors. Fry (baby fish) will also be consumed by the Platy and company.
Sexing:
There are many ways to sex a Platy (these sexing methods, by the way, can be applied to all livebearers), but there are two that are more widely used than others. The first method is to observe the shape of the Platy, Females will be longer, and also have wider stomachs (even when not pregnant) than males. The second method (and most accurate) involves observing the three fins on the underbelly of the fish. Female Platy’s will have three almost identical fins, two a little further up the belly (closer to the front) than the rear, and with a male, the two frontal fins will be the same, but the aft fin will be much smaller, and pointed.
Breeding:
Breeding Platy’s is said to be exceptionally easy, because the caretaker of the fish has to do nothing to start it, and usually can do nothing to prevent it. Platy’s, like all other livebearers (Molly’s, Guppy’s, Swordtail’s, and Mosquito Fish) give birth to live young, and do not lay eggs, so for a period of time, the fish is actually pregnant. Gestation usually lasts about a month, at which point the fry are released from the mother, and usually shortly thereafter are eaten by the mother and other platys. Determining whether a Platy is pregnant, like sexing, is not hard to do. If she exhibits one or all of the following signs, she is most likely pregnant.
1. She is much fatter than you remember her, and seems about ready to explode
2. She has a black spot that was not there before forming above the three fins used to determine the sex (this spot is called a gravid spot, and is said to be the eyes of developing fry)
3. She is a Platy
Caring for fry, like everything else about the Platy, is also exceptionally easy. If you would like a large brood (batch, litter, etc.) of fry, it is best to isolate the mother in a breeding net (purchasable at almost any Local Fish Store (LFS)) or even a separate tank, but make sure to do so before she is giving birth or close to it, or she will abort the babies and reabsorb them. There are many liquid foods and such out there and to feed baby fish, but Platy’s are not demanding, and therefor flake food crushed into tiny pieces will do. Feed in the morning and at night, and feed small amounts.
Comments:
Platy’s are a very hardy fish, and are good beginner fish, but are in no way limited to those who have just started keeping fish. They have a very inquisitive personality, and will explore all levels of the tank. Platys have a wide range of colors, including red, orange, yellow, white, black, and blue, with many different combinations of the colors. They can be found at almost any LFS, and are one of the cheapest fish available.

This is what I have in my 2 10G tanks:
Community Tank-
1 Male Mickey Mouse Platy
1 Female Mickey Mouse Platy
1 Female Silver Wag Platy
5 Neon Tetras
1 Female Opaque Betta
1 Ramshorn Snail
Planted Fry Tank-
1 Otocinclus
7 Two Month Old Platy Fry
15+ 2 Week Old Platy Fry
1 Ramshorn Snail
My success comes from getting the females pregnant in the main tank, then moving both of the females to the Fry Tank. There’s enough Java Moss to where the fry survive and my females don’t even try to eat them. 🙂 I found out that my Male Mickey Mouse Platy has the Tiger Platy Gene, so I have 5+ Tiger Platy fry so far!! I’m going to breed the Tiger Platies, and their body color is Smokey Gray with Black fins and thin Black stripes. I posted some pictures of my fry in this forum thread.

We got home from work and it was booting around the tank like a crazy fish, and now suddenly it’s at the bottom of the tank in a corner breathing heavy not doing anything. Somoeone suggested that its pregnant and i’ve never had a pregnant fish before so I’m not sure. Please help im so nervous, my fish are my babies is this normal is their pregnant

Hi, i’m looking for a little advice please. I’m new to all this,my tank has 4 Neon Tetra, 1 Siamese fighting fish, i recently introduced 2 female tuxedo platy but my siamese didn’t take to them at all. He kept attacking them so i had to take them back to the pet store (gutted as they were lovely) instead i Brought home 2 Albino Cory as a replacement to complete my tank. When i introduced them into the tank, i noticed when they went near the rocks that there was 3 tiny baby fish hiding. I am in shock and do not really know what to do it is impossible to catch them, i am assuming that the short while that the platy were in my tank 1 of them has gave birth!!! My Siamese seems to be hanging around the rock they are hiding under as if he knows. What are their chances of survival and what can i do to help them? Please some advice on this will be very much appreciated. Thanks Karen

So, I noticed a couple of comments regarding pregnant females in the absence of a male. Many livebearers can remain fertilized up to 5-6 months after the initial fertilization with the male. This means that a platy can mate with a male, be taken away from the male, have fry, and continue to have fry monthly for the next few months.
My classroom aquarium has 5 platys. I knew one female was pregnant, so when the kids started back to school last week I told them to be extra quiet around the tank. I checked on her daily, and Monday morning found one fry. The kids were ecstatic. We now have 6 fry in a still-water tank to grow (some others smothered themselves under rocks, and I assume adults ate the rest).
In reference to the crab comment: I have fiddler crabs as well as red-clawed crabs. When I feed my cichlids a snack of minnows, I always give the crabs a few to catch. If the crabs are well-fed they will leave other fish alone. I have used the crab tank as an isolation tank in the past when the tetras get sick, and the crabs currently have a tank mate of a female Betta. They live in harmony. Fast-moving fish are safe with the crabs as long as the tank is large enough. CRABS NEED ACCESS TO AIR – they will drown if they don’t get to the surface of the water. One of my Red-clawed crabs is always in my filter (eating anything that passes through). He only comes out when I feed them or when the male fiddler (a much bigger crab) decides it is his turn to eat from the filter. Do some research and don’t mix animals that are predators/prey, and give them enough SPACE.

Hi
I have one female Platy who is competely orange and she is very pregnant and looks like she is about to drop anything minute, but she has been looking like this for about 2-3 day now. She has had 18 fry already about 4 weeks ago but i didnt realise until i was cleaning the tank that she had them, but because i realized that she was so big now and i have put her in a breeding net so when she has them she will be separated from them from the frys. However, i was having a look at her to see if she was ok and i have noticed that between the three fins on her belly that she has a white spot which look like it maybe getting bigger. I have no idea what this is, just that is where the new fry will come out. Also i have been doing loads of research trying to find out if anyone else has had the same thing but no one seem to have mention anything like this on all the sites i have looked at. Please can you help me and let me know if you have any ideas what this is? I think though she is about to give birth since this morning she was sitting in the bottom corner with her tail slightly raised. I would appreciate any advice and help you can give me. Thanks

about how long does it take for platy fry to grow up because I have had two platy fry for about a year now and the biggest one isn’t even half the size of her mother. Got any tips? Oh yeah the baby is a female, could that have anything to do with it?

OMG!!! i just read that i can scare my platy and she will abort the birth!!! i freaked out cuz i came home from work i knew she was prego but thought i had another week… i just got the breeding tank… i have to remind my BF to look in on her and he said he did and she was fine but when i went to go say hello i flipped out cuz i saw a baby swimming around!!! i immediately poured some tank water into a big glass bowl and got my other fish out the tank!!! then when i went to put the mama in the breeder she was really hard to catch… ive been waiting for awhile now but no other little ones have come out and now she is going crazy swimming side to side like pacing… did i freak her out and have her abort the rest :/ is she going to die!!! 🙁 plz help ASAP!!!
June 26th, 2012 at 1:53 pm
also she was supposed to eat when i got home but totally forgot… can i feed her while she is giving birth???
June 26th, 2012 at 1:54 pm
i think she is being scared by you.
try to leave her alone.
and she will be ok.
if possible put her in dark environment and she will continue her breeding.
although platy breed during day too but for my experience,
if i leave them in dark and peaceful environment for few hours,
you will see many small babies later 🙂
June 26th, 2012 at 1:55 pm
normally they dun eat while they giving birth.
June 26th, 2012 at 1:57 pm
around 10. depend on how big the platy stomach is 🙂
i experience with 20+ babies before
June 26th, 2012 at 1:57 pm
oh ok ya its pretty bright in the kitchen… and how do i know when she is done???
June 26th, 2012 at 1:58 pm
if you want your platy to grow big in size,
you need to have a enough space for them to swim.
I put my platy in 4ft tank and they are about the same size as their mom within a year time.
June 26th, 2012 at 1:58 pm
her stomach will be flat after that 🙂
June 26th, 2012 at 2:01 pm
ya well we only have/ had 3 fish and the pet store said that was a good size but now i think we are going to need a bigger one and just keep the fry in the old one… how long do i have to keep them separated from the other fish???
June 26th, 2012 at 2:07 pm
this one u need to judge yourself,
just to make sure their size is big enough that the other big fish cannot eat them.
June 26th, 2012 at 2:07 pm
BTW, i have few tank to keep them separately 🙂
June 26th, 2012 at 2:10 pm
