Keldra: u can put few platys (3 female and 2 male) together and wait for them to mate. They wont breed in the cave tat you ready for them. You need to buy a breeding tank for them to avoid being eaten by other fish or parents.

hi i have some platy fish, swordtale, and micky mouse. I have some molly fish in my tank too. i want my fish to breed, and have a lot of fry. So my question is can i pick out a platy for for my other platy fish to breed with?

Oh and will they breed in a little cave that i have in the tank or do i need to buy a breeding net, trap, box, or tank? (that is if they WILL breed)

And what does it mean when my male platy fish puts his "thing" forward?

I HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME!!!

Hello!
I have a 55 gallon tank with 5 angelfish, two giant angel fish, one medium sized angel fish and two smaller almost dime sized angel fish.
The two giant angels paired up and laid eggs on the filter tube, most of them are brown and fertilized, only a few of them are white and no good.
Only one of the angel fish seems to be guarding the eggs, the other one doesn't seem to care about guarding because he swims around the tank, sometimes no where near the location of the eggs.
I'm not sure what to do next, in the tank I also have two rosy barbs, one giant danio, one male beta and one algae eater.
In my tank I also have small rocks on the bottom which I hear might trap the baby angelfish once they become wigglers.
I don't want to disturb them by taking out the other fish to put in a separate tank, I don't know what to do. The other fish will eventually eat the baby angels once they start swimming around if the parents don't eat them first.

Help? Thanks.

KristenL! a good rule of thumb is 1 gallon per one inch of fish. so with only a 1.77 gallon tank, you can only really buy one fish, POSSIBLY two. but you're not even supposed to go by the size when you get them, you're supposed to go by their max adult size. whoever gave you the advice to get that tank for 6-8 fish is so WRONG!!! i have a 30 gallon and a 55 and i only have 6 in my 30 gallon and 15 in my 55. they will NOT be healthy if overcrowded.
now, my ? is, i just had 1 baby mickey mouse platy. what do i do? how do i make sure he's ok? he's in the 30 gallon with 2 danios, a cory cat, a swordtail, the mama mm platy and lots of snails. should i buy a smaller tank and separate him? thanks for any advice/suggestions..

My platy had babies and when I got home they all where dead on the ground. They where soo small and looked undeveloped. Im not shure what happened but I know that the fry (baby platies) where not harassed by other fish because I but a glass divider in my tank and the only one in with the babies was the mother platy. The mother platy seems fine and so dose anyone know what happened or what? Please Help me!! because I want to have baby platies!!

Hi Edgar, first of all, thanks for visiting my site.
50 Gallon tank (i think it's around 2 feet width right?) is quite small for this community especially when all the fishes grow bigger in size. It seems a bit congested and angel fish will attack other small fishes too.

If you planning to breed your fish then you should be ready to get a additional tank when they pair up. this is to avoid the egg being eaten and the fish being disturb by others.

It's not a good idea to limit your angel fish to 1 unit. try to get a pair else she will be very lonely.
