Hi there, my boyfriend and I bought two pairs of swordtails yesterday, an orange boy and girl and a yellow boy and girl. They seemed to settle down quite quickly in the new tank with the 5 glow light tetras we also got yesterday. When we woke this morning, we notice the yellow female is now missing the lower third of her tail and seems to be distant from the other swordtails :( has she been attacked and cast out or is she ill and dying?

p.s: we have had the tank for four days before getting fish and have been treating the filter with a filter start to help the bacteria grow

Ive had some good and bad times with swordtails. I for one had experienced the death of all my females after their first drop. I provide excellent water quality, plenty of coverage, and i keep the tanks low light or no lights for 72 hours after they drop. Im able to keep most the fry alive with no problems this way, but the adults die after birthing. I have no idea way. I feed high quality food 2 times a day, and check water parameters 1 time a week with a 50% water change. So at this point Ive no idea why the mama's die.

Hi, I just purchased 3 swordtails today, and i know absloutly nothing about fish. I think one is dying. Its laying near the bottom but it still looks as though its breathing. It was fine when i first got it but a few short hours later this is the situation. And another fish has a huge string emerging from its belly its about 1cm in lenght. and its been hanging there for an hours. is this normal. as i said i have no clue about fish. cans someone help me.

Can neon or cardinal tetras be kept with swordtails? I have 6 tetras, 5 guppies and 2 swordtails, reently 1 guppy has gone missing somehow, today one of the tetras jumped out of the tank, before now they have got along fine, suddenly i notice the tetras are very pale, you can't even see their red stripe, should i move the swordtails somewhere else?

George: since you have only small fish i would suggest you can still get 4 female swords and another 2 - 6 danios as danios like to be in schools. swords are live-bearers and danios lay eggs for males to fertilize them.
hop it helps
